At SSM College of Pharmacy and Research Centre, we are dedicated to advancing pharmaceutical sciences through pioneering research and development. Our state-of-the-art laboratories and world-class infrastructure, combined with a team of dedicated faculty, create an environment where innovation and discovery flourish.
Our focus spans both applied and basic research in areas such as pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, and clinical pharmacy services. This ensures that our students and researchers are at the forefront of global healthcare advancements.
With over 350 research papers published in the last five years, SSM College continues to lead in R&D, making significant contributions to drug development, healthcare management, and therapeutic practices. At SSM College, excellence in research drives our mission to shape the future of pharmacy.
The college has given top priority to research activities. Over the last five years, it has published over 350 research papers and completed 11 major and minor projects with research grants from VGST, RGUHS and ICMR.
Dr R. V. Kulkarni, a faculty member of the college has obtained a patent for his project "Pharmaceutical composition comprising tamarind seed polyose for modified release of drug." He has also filed three more patents.
Collaborations with reputed institutions can help in the outcome of productive research. With this view, we have collaborated with several other reputed institutions in India and abroad. These collaborations have helped our institution to develop joint research projects, student exchange programs and twinning programs. Some of our key collaborations are outlined below.
Joint research projects are being conducted with different institutions of BLDE Association (given below). Multidisciplinary research projects have been submitted with different institutions to various funding agencies.

We have created state-of-the-art infrastructure with the latest equipment and research tools to research in the major disciplines of pharmaceutical sciences. The fields include formulation development, drug discovery and development studies, molecular and cellular level studies, herbal drug development, clinical research and quality assurance.
Formulation and development is a significant segment in the growth of the pharmaceutical industry. The challenge today is determining modern dosage form with an appropriate drug delivery system to enhance patient compliance. Therefore, the Department of Pharmaceutics and the Department of Pharmaceutical technology have created state-of-the-art formulation development laboratories and infrastructure to research in this field.
The following equipment are available for development, evaluation and characterisation of formulations. High Performance Liquid Chromatography
Three departments of the Institute, namely Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy, have involved in the drug discovery development-related research. The major areas include the design of new chemical entities in the field of anticancer, diabetes, anti-tubercular agents, anti-hypertensive, inflammation, neurological disorders, etc. Infrastructure and equipment available in these departments are as follows.
The Department of Pharmacology and the Department of Pharmacognosy have strengthened their infrastructure for molecular and cellular level research. The significant areas of research include anticancer, bacteriology, neurological disorders and hepatoprotective activities. The departments have the following infrastructure for conducting research.
The Department of Pharmacognosy is engaged in herbal research. Its dedicated labs for formulation development and evaluation comprise equipment such as dissolution apparatus, HPTLC and UV spectrophotometer. The department is also equipped with the required infrastructure for phytochemical investigation. Roto- vapors and large scale columns are added for purification and isolation of bio- actives from natural products. Herbal dietary supplements in the form of tablets, floating tablets, herbal patches, and different herbal creams have been successfully developed and evaluated in the department. The principal instruments in this department include
The Department of Pharmacy Practice is involved in the area of practice-based research by establishing various clinical services at Shri B.M.Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre. Drug information, adverse drug reaction and medication errors and clinical toxicology were the areas of research during the initial years.
The thrust areas of research at present includes pharmaceutical care, renal disease, respiratory disorders, patient safety, pharmacometrics, clinical toxicology and infectious disease and antibiotic stewardship, and electronic documentation of pharmacy services and its impact on practice.
